Why GBJ? Professor Lee Miller explains how Global Business Journalism makes its graduates "more competitive" in the crowded job market

Lee Miller has been a professor in the GBJ program since its inception in 2007.

In today's crowded and fast-moving business information landscape, journalists need more than traditional reporting skills. They need the ability to explain complex economic and global stories clearly and accurately, says Lee Miller, director of the Bloomberg Lab at Tsinghua University and a professor in the Global Business Journalism program.

Appearing in a new video produced by Global Business Journalism reporter Nguyen Quan Huy, Miller emphasizes that modern journalism is about storytelling across disciplines — from capital markets and finance to technology, health and medicine. With billions of websites and information sources competing for attention, he says, the challenge for journalists is knowing what matters and how to explain it.

GBJ gives you the resources of China's top university and the world's top business data and news company.

The Global Business Journalism program, Miller explains, is designed to prepare students for that reality. Students gain access to a global network of more than 500 alumni from over 75 countries, as well as hands-on exposure to professional tools used in financial journalism, including the Bloomberg Terminal.

Graduates earn a master’s degree from Tsinghua University — "China's number one university" — along with Bloomberg Markets Concepts certification, a combination Miller says helps students stand out in an increasingly competitive global job market.

While studying in GBJ, he notes, "you'll visit many companies and you'll have access to the tool of financial professionals — the technology of the Bloomberg Terminal."

Beyond academics, Miller says the GBJ experience includes campus life, cultural events and opportunities to build professional networks that extend well beyond China.

Ultimately, he says, students must choose a program based on academic focus, location and long-term career opportunities — and GBJ offers a pathway that combines rigorous journalism training with real-world business reporting skills.

"Most importantly," he says, "in a crowded world like we live in you will be more competitive and I think that's one of the key things, from an academic and career standpoint."
