The Global Business Journalism website is providing in-depth coverage of the 2024 Tsinghua School of Journalism and Communication commencement, including the celebration of the GBJ graduation. Today, we offer you the complete remarks of Tsinghua journalism school Dean Zhou Qing'an on June 28 at the GBJ ceremony in the recently renovated journalism school building.

Ladies and Gentlemen, dear colleagues, distinguished guests, and most importantly, our graduates,

Good morning!

It is my distinct honor and privilege to address you today on this momentous occasion as we celebrate the achievements of our remarkable graduates.

Over the past 17 years, the GBJ program has proudly conferred graduate degrees to more than 500 students from 72 countries, with our distinguished alumni excelling in media companies worldwide and contributing professionalism and integrity to fields such as finance, law, diplomacy, and academia. This year, we are especially proud to recognize the achievements of 14 international students who have been awarded Master’s degrees through our GBJ program and 15 Chinese students who have received diplomas and certificates from the program.

A steadfast commitment to excellence

Today, we are here to celebrate your hard work, dedication, and resilience. You have met the rigorous academic standards of Tsinghua University and enriched our community with your diverse perspectives and unwavering commitment to learning.

Our school remains steadfast in its mission to provide the highest caliber of education and research opportunities to students not only from China but from across the globe. This commitment to excellence has been recognized by The Times Higher Education World University Rankings, which awarded our School an A+. Additionally, the prestigious QS World University Rankings placed our school as the No. 1 institution in China for Communication and Media Studies.

One of my favorite poems is "If" by Rudyard Kipling, an English author known for his timeless wisdom. This poem encapsulates the virtues and qualities we hope to see in our graduates as they venture into the world. Allow me to share a few lines with you:

If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,

Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,

And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

These words remind us to stay composed under pressure, to trust in our abilities while respecting others' doubts, and to maintain integrity and humility even in the face of adversity.

As you step into the next chapter of your life, remember that you carry with you the values and education that TSJC has instilled in you. Uphold the virtues of patience, resilience, and integrity as you navigate your future endeavors.

Graduates, as you embark on your new journeys, please know that you are joining a global network of TSJC alumni who are making significant impacts around the world. We are confident that you will continue to uphold the values of professionalism and integrity, and we look forward to witnessing your future successes.

Congratulations to the Class of 2024!

Thank you.
